The Rise of AI Platforms

As a Cube insider, you'll get access to interesting new trends, what we think about them and how you can benefit.

New Trend:  The Development of AI Platforms

The past five years has seen the emergence of AI platforms in various forms and services. The accessibility of AI has become very prevalent for the mainstream and general public. The development of artificial intelligence could be confusing to track, but developers and engineers have been working on it to expand on its potential for a long time. Over the last few years, massive data, open-source advances in deep neural networks, and powerful hardware has led to AI technology breakthroughs, such as image classification, speech transcription, and autonomous driving. Data scientists who have worked on the advancement of AI have worked in many different positions as a software developer, IT administrator, and security officer. To accomplish the best in AI modeling, data scientists working for Google, Uber, Facebook, and other leading tech companies built their own AI platforms. These platforms automate the supporting infrastructure, or glue code, to build, train, and deploy AI at any scale.

There are four traits for a successful AI model.

  • It first has to have perception. AI collects data from the physical world and converts it into a digital form for a computer to process and understand.

  • The collected data is then interpreted by machine learning algorithms to extract meaningful information and perform actions based on that information.

  • It then uses representation and reasoning based on the data collected. Representation involves encoding the information into a form that computers can understand and use, such as binary data, mathematical models, or symbolic logic.

  • Reasoning refers to a process of drawing conclusions and making decisions based on the stored information inside a computer system. Representation and reasoning can be combined to build complex systems to solve complicated problems.

AI models use machine learning to learn from the data and improve accuracy in performing tasks without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning uses trained models on large sets of examples and continually updates as more data becomes available. The final trait is the natural language built into all AI systems. Their responses have to sound human in order for them to be transparent and explainable for everyone to understand.

All four of these characteristics within AI are rooted in the intelligence within AI software. It’s the layer that sits between the backroom tech and the person using AI. The AI software directs its intelligence for everyone to have access, shaping it into a form suited for anyone. The new form of AI chatbots aims to spark conversations between the person using it and the AI computer code. Start-ups and established companies all try to use the rapid development and attention of AI technology for their own advantage and help their consumers. Many applications use AI software to make daily life more manageable. Websites like Grammarly and Otter.ai help in crafting or transcribing written material to make it easier for people to comprehend and deconstruct daily tasks and routines. AI chatbots have also provided the tools and services needed to create content and provide material to satisfy a client’s needs.

New Insight: The Benefit of ChatGPT and Gemini

The launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 sparked a huge interest in artificial intelligence. It was backed by Microsoft and OpenAI in the beginning of 2023, while Google made its own generative AI with Bard, which got rebranded to become Gemini as an improved AI chatbot.  ChatGPT and Gemini and DeepSeek are the biggest centers of conversation around generative AI. They use data collection by machine learning models to answer questions and create images, text, and videos. Both have their benefits and limitations.

According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, ChatGPT is based on a generative pre-trained transformer model that finds patterns within data sequences. Its AI language model produces responses to user queries and serves as the interface that lets users communicate with the language model. After May 2024, there have been a few different versions of ChatGPT that are either free or provide a paid subscription. Its popular applications are generating content for emails, social media captions, blog posts, text summarization, language translations, code generation, learning and education, building virtual assistants, simulation and training, research assistance, and building games and other entertainment applications. ChatGPT is multimodal, meaning users can use images and voice to create prompts for the chatbot.

ChatGPT users can log onto the free version with any email account, and it includes an API that developers can use to integrate OpenAI LLMs into third-party software. On the other hand, there is no save button, which means only users can copy and paste answers from ChatGPT into another application. It does have an archive button that features previous responses in ChatGPT’s left-hand pane for quick retrieval. Since it’s text-based, it can’t include images, videos, charts, or links in its answers. It also lacks the ability to search the Internet.

Google designed its AI model, Gemini, to retrieve information as a simple answer similar to smart assistants, such as Alexa and Siri. It first launched itself as Bard in March 2023 before being rebranded as Gemini in February 2024. It uses LLMs to reply to prompts with information it has already learned or can retrieve from other Google services. Like ChatGPT, it is also multimodal and understands audio, video, and computer code as well as text. It currently doesn’t have an image generation feature, as Google plans on fixing its inaccuracies. Google’s search engine integrated Gemini’s capabilities and made it available in Google Workspaces like Docs, Gmail, Sheets, Slides, and Meet. It does allow users to upload images, but not create images.

ChatGPt and Gemini are very similar to one another. They’re both free generative AI services, but each provides nearly identical paying subscription services with similar interfaces and use cases. They also have similar functions and work by users typing in a query to get a response. They only differ in their training models, data sources, user experiences, and how they store data. ChatGPt stores all prompts and queries for users to review past conversations through its archive feature. Gemini stores conversations in a user’s Google account for 18 months, but users can change the retention period to three months or 36 months in their activity settings. Gemini conversations can appear in searches, which has raised privacy concerns. Google has disclosed that it collects conversations, location, feedback, and usage information so it can develop, provide, maintain, and improve on its services. Customers can also delete information from their accounts using My Google Activity or delete Google products and accounts to protect their data from being shared. Google has stated that they will only share information with third parties with the user’s consent and law enforcement when required. For many people, they claim to prefer ChatGPT over Gemini since they tend to use it more efficiently for their services.

New Action: How to Make AI Platforms Work for You

The rise of AI platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini are products of the development within AI software. Developers have expanded on AI’s characteristics and services to make it more accessible and reliable for customers and clients. When it comes to how you wish to use AI, it’s important to understand your goal in using AI. It could be drafting an email or creating an image suited for your company’s brand. It can also be used as a learning tool for new and existing employees at your company. Whatever the purpose, AI is still developing and improving on itself by data scientists and software engineers. It is still a work in progress, but only to improve itself to become a great innovation.

  • The development and rise of AI platforms are linked to software developers expanding on the potential of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

  • AI uses perception, representation, reason, learning, and natural language to create a more powerful impact on society.

  • People are now using AI platforms to create their own content, such as drafting written blog posts or crafting AI-based images.

  • ChatGPt and Gemini have proven to be the most popular AI platforms because of their accessibility and benefit
